May 2007

Many thanks to Chris Britts for leading the April meeting.  I understand the iris program was very informative and fun and that the speaker, Anne Cline, gave everyone pieces of iris rhizomes and invited us to visit her garden.

Some of you know already that Kay Blakeney fell and fractured her hip in 2 places.  She is in Heartland Rehabilitation, 6950 Farmington Road, Room 119; West Bloomfield 48322, 248-661-1700.  Her cell phone is 248-661-3039; and she welcomes your phone calls, cards, and afternoon visits.  The doctors say she is strong, so we hope she will be back with us very soon.

Kay was scheduled to do a flower arranging demonstration at our May meeting; and some of our other very talented arrangers--Marge Allen, Betty Bock, Jan Dolan, and Eleanor Sanders will be standing in for her.

We are happy to welcome new member, Trudi Ferguson, who was installed at the April meeting.  Please add her to your yearbooks: 27592 Kingsgate Way, Apt. 2, Farmington Hills 48334, 248-553-2416.

Due to an error in last month's newsletter about the date of the field trip, there were 2 trips to Telly's!  I'm sure all who went enjoyed the experience.

Please bring any of your garden books that you would like to leave at your doctor's, dentist's, or other places.  Betti Pool will have FGC labels to put in the books to, hopefully, attract new members.

Upcoming plant exchanges, which will be held rain or shine:

Organized once again by Commissioner Betti Pool, The Farmington Hills Beautification Commission will hold the semi-annual Plant Swap in the parking lot of City Hall at the corner of Eleven Mile and Orchard Lake Roads on Saturday, May 12, from 8:30-11:00 a.m.  This event has been very successful and a lot of fun.

The Livonia Garden Club will be having a Plant Sharing on Saturday, May 12, from 10-12, at Greenmead, which is at Newburgh and Eight Mile.  They invite you to come even you don't have plants to share.

 Other events:

The Farmington Community Arts Council Starry Night Gala & Auction April 25-29 at the Costick Center.  Betti Pool and her committee, Eleanor DiGirolamo, Jan Dolan, Joann Jenkins and Mary Lou Seaman, have designed a display about our FGC; so let's all attend and show our appreciation for their efforts.

Gardens Galore and Omega Tour presents The Magnificent Gardens in Illinois June 2-3.  I will have flyers at the May meeting.

The Springfield Garden Club will be having a style show and luncheon, Daffodils & Duds, featuring Coldwater Creek fashions at the Deer Lake Banquet Center on Wednesday, May 9, in Clarkston.  You can request tickets by mail by calling Donna McDonald at 248-891-0900 or Mary Bertolini at 248-620-9281.

The 76th Annual Michigan Garden Clubs Convention June 4-6 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel will be held in Grand Rapids.  I will have more info at the May meeting.

Enjoy this wonderful spring weather!                                                                 Dianne
