It was good to be back at the newly renovated Longacre House for our lovely Past Presidents' Tea.  (I realized afterwards that I forgot to introduce the past presidents.  I promise to do better next year.)  Nan and her committee had the tables beautifully decorated with tablecloths loaned by Betti Pool's daughter Kelly and centerpieces done by Betti.

July 9 will be our annual picnic at 12:00 noon on the porch of the Warner Mansion.  Members with last names beginning A-L please bring a dessert, M-Z please bring a salad or main dish.  Also everyone should bring her own place setting.  Lemonade and iced tea will be provided.  Please park in the church parking lot next door since there is not enough parking spaces at the mansion.

Michele Spillane will be having another Holiday Tables planning meeting at the Spicer House on Tuesday, August 28, at 10:00 a.m.  We hope to see everyone who worked on the committee last year and anyone else who would like to help this year.  We have jobs both big and small.  Please join us.

As many of you know, Paul Paddon, whose gardens have been on our garden walk several times, passed away in January.  Marty Figley has an article in the June Michigan Gardener about Paul and his amazing gardens.  I drove past his house the other day, and it was sad to see weeds and empty beds where he used to plant the 10,000 annuals, which he grew from seed in his 2 greenhouses, and the many beautiful perennials.  Several pictures of his gardens are in the magazine.

If you aren't familiar with the Michigan Gardener, it is available free at Steinkopf's, ACO, and many other stores around town.  In it you will find other garden walks than I am listing here as well as articles and advertising of interest to gardeners.

Researchers at the University of Arkansas recently found that gardening is good for your bones.  Women age 50 and over who gardened at least once a week had higher bone densities than did those who jogged, swam, walked or did aerobics.  It's probably the combination of hard work, -- digging, pulling and pushing -- and being outside in the sun.  Sunlight boosts vitamin D production, which helps the body absorb calcium.  So get out there and pull weeks -- it's good for you! – Betti Pool
